Ovale orange trees go back a long way, starting in Brazil, from where this variety was brought to Spain by the Spanish conquistadors of South America. Firstly this variety took roots in Spain and Portugal during the reign of the House of Bourbon, then it reached Calabria and Sicily, where it found optimal conditions and gave plentiful fruit. The name comes from the characteristic, elongated, oval form of the fruit, which distinguishes this variety from many other “blondes”. The fruit skin is slightly rough, orange with a shade of green at the end of the harvest season. The flesh is very juicy, with hardly any seeds, perfect to be eaten raw, as well as for juice. This variety is very late – it ripens from March until May together with other varieties such as Valencia or Lanelate.
